Student Insurance Enrollment Information
The University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) requires students to complete specific requirements for both initial and continued enrollment per the UMMC Insurance Requirements for UMMC Students policy.
Students in specified distance education programs with no clinical or research components requiring their physical presence on any UMMC campus are exempt from these requirements per the UMMC Exempt Distance Education Programs policy.
To enroll in a student health insurance plan, please visit the Office of Student Accounting intranet website (UMMC login required).
Insurance and Premium facts
- UnitedHealthcare provides health, Dental, and Vision insurance
- Students enrolled in programs requiring health insurance are offered UMMC insurance prior to their initial registration and are guaranteed acceptance during the first 30 days of enrollment.
- A student insurance application received after the first 30 days of enrollment is only accepted under the following conditions:
- The student has a qualifying event. Examples of qualifying events are listed on the Office of Student Accounting intranet website (UMMC login required). Applications due to a qualifying event must be received within 30 days of the event.
- A new student who waives coverage may subsequently apply for coverage during Open Enrollment in August.
- Annual Open Enrollment for student health insurance plans offered by UMMC is in August. Coverage for students who apply during Open Enrollment starts on September 1st.
- Premiums are charged in the Fall and Spring semesters. Students who acquire coverage in the middle of a premium period will be charged a pro-rated amount.
- The Fall semester charge will cover September through February.
- The Spring semester charge will cover March through August.
- In the event a student's insurance premium remains unpaid for an extended period of time, and no financial aid is forthcoming, UMMC reserves the right to cancel the student's health insurance.
- The student must inform the Office of Student Accounting in writing to cancel health insurance. Failure to cancel may result in additional charges.
- Once accepted into a student health insurance plan, coverage is renewed automatically until the student graduates or cancels the health insurance plan. If a student graduates, withdraws, is dismissed, or goes on a Leave of Absence (LOA), the student must contact the Office of Student Accounting to discuss health insurance continuation.
- The maximum amount of time that student health insurance may continue after a student leaves UMMC is three (3) months.
- The following two (2) conditions must be met to continue student health insurance:
- The student must have been enrolled in the health insurance plan for at least three (3) months at the time of separation from UMMC, and
- the continuation of the coverage application must be made before the current coverage expires.
Note. The student health insurance plans offered by UMMC are not part of the same plans offered to UMMC employees.
